TERRITORY:
The Reserve lies on the western slopes of the Monti della Marsica.
The Reserve is located in a lake basin formed by the resurgence of the waters originating in the mountains of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. On the edge of the lake is a floating island, "La Rota", formed by water plants and peat. The large supply of water to the lake results from the presence of a vast karst area surrounding the lake itself.
Here you will find the characteristic "na'ue", a boat made from wooden planks caulked with a special mixture of moss and flour, used to travel to the floating island or to go on fishing trips (fishing rights are reserved for the local inhabitants only) or to collect the water plants that the local farmers used as cattle fodder
FLORA:
The reserve is rich in aquatic vegetation formed of water-weeds, waterlilies and dense reedbeds.
FAUNA:
The lake fish include the Salmo cettii, stickleback and carp. There are also crayfish and river crabs.
The reedbeds are home to numerous species of nesting and migratory bird including the moorhen, little egret, grey heron and kingfisher.
ART AND HISTORY:
There are two archaeological sites of considerable historical interest corresponding to protohistoric and archaic settlements. The first lies along the western edge of the town of Posta Fibreno and the second in Colle Roccia-Spinelle, on the site of a Roman villa.
